Hello! Welcome to Rousties, a mother and daughter food blog. This blog will follow our trials and tribulations in the kitchen.
This is the Sous Baker, aka the daughter, writting today!
First and foremost, the name. We thought long and hard about what we wanted to call our blog. Eventually, we settled on Rousties (which is pronounced roasties). This is based partly on our surname and partly on a nickname given to me in high school. We thought it was a very fitting name as one of our favourite meals is a classic Sunday Roast.
You could say that baking is in our DNA. My grandmother is descended from 2 generations of bakers. My great-great grandfather and great-grandfather both owned bakeries in Cheshire, so all 4 generations of this family have grown up baking with their parents. Every school holiday, mum would ask me what I wanted to do, and every time I would answer "baking day!". We have baked everything from traditional bread to French patisserie.
Mum always used to say that she found baking therapeutic and I never really understood what she saw in baking until I moved away from home. I am halfway through a degree at the University of Edinburgh, and most of the time if I am not studying you will find me in the kitchen either cooking or baking. Slow Cooker Saturdays have become a staple in my flat.
Unfortunately we won't always be able to post together - the 300 mile distance between us for 8 months of the year would make this a bit difficult! However, most of the time we are involved in each other's cooking processes over the phone if not in person. Our aim for this blog is to share tried and tested recipes and ideas...and maybe even some of our failures.
Until next time,
The Sous Baker x
